Objectives: EuroSDR has started an initiative to evaluate the ongoing developments in image based DSM generation. For this purpose a joint test data set has been defined, which will allow potential participants to demonstrate the state-of-the-art in high quality image based DSM generation. The test data set consists of two aerial images. Basic scope is the evaluation of 3D point clouds and DSM produced from this data by different participants with different software systems. The benchmark on image matching will therefore provide a platform for software developers and initiate an exchange between vendors of photogrammetric software and DSM producers like national mapping authorities.

Participants of the test will have the opportunity to present and discuss their results during a two day workshop held from June 13th to 14th in Vienna, which will be organized by the Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying (BEV). By brynging together software developers, distributors and users of dense matching software the workshop will provide a suitable platform to review the outcomes of the benchmark and demonstrate the current developments of image based DSM generation.

For implementation of the benchmark and organization of the workhop the steering committee of EuroSDR has established the following project team

  • Prof. Dr. Norbert Haala, Institute of Photogrammetry, Stuttgart University, Project leader
  • Wolfgang Stoessel, State Agency of Surveying and Geoinformation Bavaria
  • Dr. Michael Gruber, Microsoft Photogrammetry
  • Prof. Dr. Norbert  Pfeifer, Vienna University of Technology, President EuroSDR Commission 2
  • Michael Franzen, Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying, Vienna

Additional information on the scope of the benchmark, the used test data sets and the expected outcome is available at the project website http://www.ifp.uni-stuttgart.de/eurosdr/ImageMatching/ During the benchmark, this website will also be used to distribute the data and discuss the results between the participants.
