Objectives: New digital wide angle airborne cameras offer excellent signal-to-noise ratio, and high forward overlap capability and, as such, are far more efficient for image matching than what was previously available. Recent tests, organized by the German society of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geoinformation (DGPF), shows that, in this new context, digital image matching could be a valid alternative or perfect complement to LiDAR capture processes.
It is proposed to launch a benchmarking study of image matching approaches for DSM computation. This study will focus on a limited number of data sets, to address different types of landscapes, and will require contributors to produce a DSM with different algorithms and software solutions.
Reference data may result from LiDAR data collection, stereoscopic or terrestrial measurements or DSM computed from higher resolution images. This benchmarking study aims at highlighting the pros and cons of the considered image matching techniques. This will help our community to better understand the potential application ranges of these techniques. It may also help in identifying new perspectives for research on digital image matching.
